Hmm, my research strongly suggests only females can have both "red" and "black" coloration because the X chromosome is responsible for color and and only females have 2 X's.

That's why calico's are 99.99% always female.

Male calico's have an extremely rare genetic mutation and actually have an "extra" chromosome- XXY and/or are hermaphrodites!
