Those dent pullers are supposed to be fast. So I think that was the normal approach on a lot of repairs. :/

Thickest was probably 3/8” of filler. Slide hammer was common,when back of panel wasnt accessible. Drop inner wheel well and its all clear space. Even as an amateur, i would never have done it that way.
