340 A body versus 383 B body

I have owned my '68 FB Formula S since 6 June 1969 which was the last day of my junior year in HS. I raced it hundreds of times at SoCal strips so have lots of experience with the car. It was an early build (August 1967 casting date) 340. The original owner only put Cragars on it and cutout exhaust. Tires were H70x14 retreads with a sticky compound (back when there actually were shops that would retread tires!) Cost $20 each back then. I ran the car mostly with the rear seat out, but otherwise stock. It turned a best of [email protected] with a stock 3.55 SureGrip. I had about 350 runs ont he car the first 4 years I owned it. I got good a launching the car with minimal weal spin, but back then there was no 60' times so no data. I saw a number of new 340 Dusters that ran 13.70's to 13.90's in stock form, so that was much quicker than magazine times for all of these 340's. I used to spank BB Chevy's as they had no traction, and BB Camaro's were even easier.
My best race was at Irwindale when I raced a brand new 440+6 Cuda. We were neck and neck the entire track, but I pulled him at top end and ran a 13.55 @ 104.1. The engine was missing at top end so I pulled into the pits to change plugs. The 440+6 pulled in next to me and wanted to see my Hemi as he said he hadn't been beat yet. His jaw dropped when he saw the 340. Just walked away.

105 MPH is pretty impressive.
