VACUUM PUMP QUESTION

A friend of mine is getting his engine built and was told by the builder that he will need a vacuum pump for his brakes so they have enough vacuum. Is there a certain distance the vacuum pump has to be from the brake booster ? He would like to mount it in the trunk. Would that be to fare away ?
