To the OP, look around on top of the hump and you may find where a floor shifter bracket was welded or screwed to the floor to make the car a floor shift, console automatic at some point in the cars life. If it were mine, I would cut a piece of sheet metal to overlap the hole and use some short sheet metal screws to hold it in place using the existing screw holes around the cut out hole. Add seam sealer and it will be good to go.
