I think the diesel responds better than the gas engines.
my guess is because most diesels run turbos, and most gas do not
getting that turbo to add even a few pounds (and having the fuel and spark to safely use it) makes more of a difference then just about any tuning you can do to a N/A engine
for that matter though, i once had a lil VW Passat, with a 1.8t turbo gas engine in it
fun lil car, rated at 170 hp and 166 foot pounds
i had some whizkid reprogram the ECU, and instead of 7 PSI that turbo would spike at 17 and hold 16 all day long (the most the stock fuel system could safely handle, with a heavier FPR i could have gotten a higher boost
just those changes netted an advertised 50 horsies and 65 feet
i never had her on the dyno but boy did she scoot along
