Yeah before my stores had FelPro, we had McCord gaskets and Victor gaskets. The former two were good quality gaskets but I think FelPro even better. You're right about the head gaskets though. Fel-Pro head gaskets are great and I've never had a failure with them but when building a high compression engine and you want to use a thinner head gasket I would always go steel.
