Street Freaks, Customs, Rods, Street Machines...60's 70's 80's
I was 11 in 1970, too young to experience the muscle car era firsthand. But I remember clearly, going for bike rides just to see who was out in what cool car. I'd also stop at the local drug store to buy any car magazines that might pop up, other than all the mags I had subscriptions to- High Performance Cars, Hot Rod, Car Craft, Popular Hot Rodding, and Super Stock & Drag Illustrated. I remember being schnookered by Wheels Afield, I subscribed sight unseen, and had to endure a year of RV mags!
I bought my well used, but would've been an easy resto, 70 Challenger R/T in '79 ($800!). Had a ball with it, didn't think anything of selling it in '82. I had a speed shop re-do the heads, and I put bearings and rings in it in a friend's driveway. It ran 14.40's on L60-14's. Still smoked, and used oil, but not as much as it did! (You mean a driveway rebuild ain't a good idea? lol)
On one hand, I wish I had been old enough to buy a new muscle car, but now, at almost 64, I'll take the 10 years!
