Turn a small drill press into a Bore/ Hone. Bolt it to the top of your engine block & do your own machining .

One of the first things you learn when introduced to the hone machine, in my case sunnen ck10... The course stone will just skate scratch and never cut on a hard block...and make a neat high pitch noise.
