No, make sure both surfaces are clean and level. I learned the hard way after replacing the driver's side on my 318 at least 4 or 5 times. The gasket is more likely to blow out and cause a leak.

Thanks for sharing your hard earned lesson. That's just what I'm trying to avoid. Just want to do it once.
