Yup, I've done a LOT of them. I found a 5/8 metal cutting hole is DEAD perfect. Cut all the way THROUGH the drum and just scratch the surface of the hub. The drum will fall off.
I dont ever think I have cut that, just pushed them out usually. Reason is what keep the drum on afterwards in theory? The area it swedges into is gone. Never screwed up a stud either.
