What Are You Doing To/With Your Car Today?
The Carter AFB on my 63 Valiant slant six has been acting up, mostly due to modern gas and having sat too long. Main problem is the accelerator pump wasn't working because the brass piston is stuck in its bore. It's happened before, and is a PITA to get out because there's nothing to grab on to. Have been soaking it with carb cleaner, but to no effect so far. So I'm swapping the AFB for the 500 Edelbrock sitting in the trunk of my non-running Studebaker Lark convertible project car. Don't have the Mopar throttle adapter, so ordered one from Amazon. Should be here today. Of course, I'll need to change the air filter base, too, but I have a couple of spares. One advantage to the switch will be that the Edelbrock carb has an electric choke. May go back to the AFB later, but for now I'm tired of messing with it.
I also have been prepping my new Edgy finned aluminum head for its installation on the flathead six in my 49 Dodge. Had to rig up a mounting spot for the carb linkage (trimmed a piece of aluminum carb adapter to fit between two fins, had it tig welded in, then drilled and tapped it for the throttle bellcrank), plus drill and tap three holes on the side of the head to mount the oil filter and spark plug loom (which also originally held the coil, but now have an HEI coil mounted on the inner fender for the electronic ignition). The oil filler pipe also bolts to the front-most hole.
Job was made easier by my brandy new drill press:
