Radio wiring

Wondering if some smart minds can help me out (or reassure me)? I removed the AM radio in my 71’ Demon, and installed a Retro Sound radio, and it’s great. However, I completely abandoned the T style wiring harness while doing that, and was left without instrument illumination. Upon further investigation, and looking into past forums about this, I understand that the orange wires in the bottom portion of the harness are in fact for the instrument illumination. I tried to bypass this by making a male/male crossover, to complete the current cycle, and by doing that, the instrument lights stay on when the ignition power is on, regardless if my headlights are on or off. I can live with that, but am wondering if maybe this isn’t such a good idea considering I might run the risk of frying out bulbs, and or, cooking the wiring?
