Hemmings-
The Ohio Turnpike Commission had a different take on Hemis. In 1957, it bought eight to 10 copies of the new Dodge Coronet D-501 two-door sedan, perhaps the fastest single car Mopar produced, and issued them to Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers on the turnpike. We had heard about these cars for several years, but had never actually seen one, until the OSHP Public Information Office searched the patrol's archives and located these photos. The D-501 was powered by a 354-cu.in. Hemi with dual Carter WCFB four-barrels, 11.0:1 compression and a claimed 340hp that was probably a very light estimate. Only 56 of the D-501s were built.
