I once bought a home CD player, met in parking lot a long way from my home and demo went wrong. Guy swore it worked but we couldn't verify and he dropped his price. I somehow sort of believed him, payed the reduced price and when I got it home it was fine (impedance mismatch I believe, plus we were demoing it off of an inverter). Anyway, I sent the asking price to his Paypal, he couldn't believe it and stated "once in a while" he ran into someone that gave him hope for humans. Yay me lol. There's truth tho in that a lot of 'em suck!
