Guns, Dogs and Blades QnA

I'm not a hunter, and am embarrassed to say I'd never seen the round. Looked at ballistics, and it looks to be a good shooter.
It is nasty accurate and very flat shooting. In essence it began life as a wildcat round. The result of simply necking down a 308. It is deadly on small deer, it never really gained popularity as it falls off the map at about 350 yards. So it did not hunt well “out West”. But here in the South in our mountains, where Deer typically are around a 100 pounds and a long shot is 150 yards it is the cats pajamas! It is tailored to small stature shooters due to the minimum recoil, my wife is exactly that. Five foot nothing and an undisclosed weight of just over 100 pounds! Not to say she is scared, as she dropped her last Elk at 520 yards with her 7mm Remington Mag. We practiced at 500 yards all summer prepping her for an Idaho hunt. We would shoot every weekend until her rifle hurt her. Sometimes that was as few as three shots sometimes more. Too much boob not enough shoulder for the 7mag. Not a complaint mind you just body mechanics. What I did not want to do was drive her to pain and frustration every practice session so we just let her body dictate how long we practiced. She will lay in the dirt for two days for a opportunity to harvest an Elk. Over the years she simply derives so much pleasure from Elk hunting many years I would scout and she was the only one with a tag. I had as much fun guiding and scouting as I ever would actually shooting. She is like a little kid come deer and Elk season. Yes I am blessed.
