I'm looking for an intermediate shaft for a 360 magnum. Apparently they are hard to find. I believe the part number is Melling IS-72. I had my engine built, got it in, went to pump up the oil and noticed there was no intermediate shaft (well at least I didn't have to remove it...). I called the builder, he said they are a hard to find item (I wish he had told me that months ago that I needed to buy one).

Anyone have one?

Brian

Have you tried a junkyard? those still pop up all the time, if you find a van with the 5.9, the back of the engine will be really easy to access without having to lean over the whole engine compartment

I'm gonna try the junkyard. I don't see any Ram Vans in our local inventory, but there are a few 5.9L trucks. Is that shaft the same in the 5.2L magnum?

Out of curiosity, what's so special and different from the LA one?

I thought they were the same. Roller cams are made from a different material than flat tappet cams and usually and wear the intermediate gear out fast, but I thought when I did my roller lifter swap I looked into it and the factory Magnum cams didn't take a special intermediate shaft. But I don't remember for sure now.

Not sure what part of California that you're located but if you're southern California, I Pull you Pull in pomona (I think they also have Fresno and other locations) is VERY reasonable with their prices. LKQ seems to be setting their prices in competition with the dealer sometimes

Thanks everyone, I got one. See pic. It was from a 5.2L Ram Van - that was great advice!!! Much easier to get to, took me literally 5 minutes to pull it. Pick-n-Pull charged me for this and a piece of trim for my wife's minivan.....$12.

Note to cite above to IS-72 at A1 Racing, I called them and Melling, NOBODY has this part currently. Also, when I look up part numbers, it appears this is the same for 318 an 360 magnum. I believe it's the same for LA small block as well. Anybody see that differently, let me know. I don't see any part, serial number or other markings on the part itself.

Definitely the same for 5.2 and 5.9. Only question in my mind is if an LA is the same or if the roller cam in the Magnum forces a different gear.

No, the magnum roller cam is just cast iron, not billet so it uses regular gear

Nice, thanks. I did notice you can still buy Melling bronze gear versions but they are $200.

...I also want to note, that those seats in that Ram Van were velvet and really comfy. Not only was it easier to retrieve the shaft than say a pickup, but I did so in luxurious comfort.

No, but I will say you have to watch your tools. On my way out one guy said someone stole his socket set and he was only gone for like a minute to look at something else.

rule #1 at the yard you don't let your tools out of your sight.
rule #2 don't loan anybody anything you can't afford to lose or have broken
rule #3 the foul mouthed girl with black choppy hair and tattoos likes brown liquor and fast cars, proceed with caution.

Thanks, it's a new build, the brass bushing is new. After cleaning it up, the intermediate shaft is in excellent condition.

I feel bad, some people actually go to the yard for the sole purpose of stealing tools to make some money....it's sad. When I was a kid, the junkyard was a much more congenial place. People would help you, no questions asked. I don't recall ever having any tools taken.
