Dual point distributor question

I don't think you need a scope for this. If you can feel the shaft wobble, that's too much.
Read the book. They show 2* on a dwell meter and with the spring scale play test, .006" of side movement. I can certainly feel .006, so it's a matter of perception. These are bushed, not ball bearings. I have no idea what the OP is experiencing, or how hard he may be pushing.

Also don't forget the possibility of play in the vacuum advance system. The dual point dist I have seen have a ball bearing advance plate, and if any of that gets sloppy you will also have trouble. On that note, do NOT forget to provide a ground jumper to the advance plate, because they have a poor ground through the bearing.
