They don’t their biggest downfall when introduced by Mazda in the 70’s was rotor seal failure and that was due to spinning so damn fast past the intake and exhaust ports, more like a sleeve valve motor, or as stated a 2 stroke with transfer ports ( e.g. like chainsaws mowers etc) rather than valves
