Quarter panel/door skin contours?

Long story bearable, my '72 Swinger (Special- anyone have any extra "Special" badges they wanna part with?) has the usual lower rear quarter rot from sitting neglected forever. At one point in my younger years, I bought a Hemi S/S wheel opening cutout template and cut out one side before realizing the template was WAY wrong, and just gave up even trying to fix it. The car has looked stupid for years because of it, and I really want to mostly fix the screw-up and drive the car again after 28 years of being off the road. At one time, I had completely stripped the car down to the bare shell (it sat outside on a pallet with only the rear glass installed for 15 years). Last year, I bought a 4-door '72 Dart parts car and a '72 Scamp to strip to put my old car back together. I am getting ready to have the 4-door taken away, but I was standing outside, looking at the 4-door's body and it got me wondering- since the body lines look "really close" between the doors and quarters, could a person actually use a door skin as a quarter patch without much work? Hey- if it's a dumb idea and it works, it isn't a dumb idea, right?
