My father would pick up used cast iron pans and bake them in the oven on the self clean mode and they came out like new ! Just saying, , might be easier !
You can’t clean rust off a cast iron pan by baking it…at any temperature.

Also, heat above 500F will permanently destroy the cast iron molecular structure rendering it unsalvageable and completely useless for cooking.

The self-clean oven method can only be used for flaking off old seasoning and the cycle has to be short so as to not destroy the cast iron.

Removing old seasoning is best done with oven cleaner as the lye will dissolve the coating without harming the pan.

Rust has to be manually removed to get back down to the pure cast iron surface below it before it can be properly seasoned.
