Just picked up a 1964 Valiant that had a 360 installed in it. About 10 miles into the ride back from the shop, after the motor and transmission was installed, the engine caught on fire (That's what I was told). Wiring was all burned up. My question is, do I need to be looking at a replacement wiring harness for the car, which originally came with a slant 6, or for the engine, a 360 which came out of a Dart? I guess to simplify, is the wiring harness matched to the car or to the engine?

Both. It needs to be compatible with a '64 Valiant, and a V8.
Like Rusty said, one for a 273 will work fine.
Some vendors can modify their harnesses- for instance, if your 360 has electronic ignition, or later model alternator and electronic voltage regulator.
But first, figure out why the harness/engine burned up...

I sure wish I could tell why it burned up. The carburetor is gone too so I'm thinking it had something to do with that. I figured we'll start with the wiring harness and go from there. I tried reaching out to the owner who had the car when it caught on fire, hopefully he knows. Thanks for the advice!!! Can you tell I'm excited to start on this project?

i'm pretty sure classic industries has complete front harnesses-- engine & lights-- that are modified for electronic ignition. they're about $300

So does year one, will be a M&H harness. I just bought one for my 65, engine forward harness, so includes lights. Sounds like you found one though. Good luck!

M&H would be my choice too. Might take a while to get though....

It actually shipped right out. The rear light harness was backordered though.

It HAS to be correct for a 64 A body ONLY. You will find that in 1964, there are only 2 plugs that go into the bulkhead, and the ammeter terminals are in the place where the 3rd plug would be. I’m going to bet $2 that the harness you receive will not fit your 64 car, as they are not being reproduced, unless they just started making them.

Do you have the tech service manual and wiring diagrams?

It'll help translate where things go and follow the color coding
If the wiring diagrams are in the 65 service manual then yes I have them, but if not I don't.

This is the 64 TSM.
