Stop in for a cup of coffee

So yesterday, we took a family day trip to a place called Spring Mill. It’s an old town that was founded in 1816, abandoned after the civil war and eventually purchased by the State in 1916. All these buildings are the original structures from the original town. The mill dates to 1816, the others are as new as 1829. They have been restored back in 1934 but not until just this summer when the mill wheel and trough needed restored.

The state now has a nearly year round crew of reenactors manning each building.

Pretty creepy feeling but pretty cool never the less.

The park is also home to the Virgil “Gus” Grissom Memorial and museum. Which houses Molly Brown, the Gemini 3 capsule that Grissom and John Young piloted in Gemini 3. Grissom’s home town and house are mere minutes down the road from here.

Grissom’s space suit from Mercury 2, the infamous mission that sank the capsule, Liberty Bell 7, is also home here as it some personal effect. Grissom was amongst those killed in the Apollo 1 fire in January 1967.
