Squeeling poverty hub caps??

So I've had this hideous squeeling noise that's rotational , it's been driving me crazy. I've got the steel 8 inch cop wheels and cop hub caps on my 56 pick up, I took it for one last drive today before it's winter sleep. After going around the block and noticed the noise didn't change when applying the brakes or applying the clutch, I thought WTH, why not remove the hub caps and try again. And wouldn't you know it, the noise was gone. So has anyone had this? What to do? Thought of greasing the nubs where they snap on but then would they fly off? Ideas.
 
are they turning on the engagement rim/hub? because if they are something is wrong, thems should be tight tight on there.

are you sure it's not something vibrating and giving off a high pitch frequency that's being echoed in the hubcap?
 
First things I would check, would be the wheel bearings, and the squeakers on the brake pads. Bent backing plate may also be rubbing on the rotor. I can't think of a single reason for a hubcap to make a noise, unless it was pinching something through the wheel, and against the brake caliper, that was rubbing against the rotor.
 
You could take the hubcaps off one at a time and drive it to see if you can pinpoint the corner of the vehicle that has some awry.

Yes. Only once. More of a creek sound.Same as you I did the "What the heck?" Factory wheels and caps.Mostly heard at slow speeds.
A touch of silicone on the nubs cured it. Never had any others do it.

Ok, I think this is what I need to try, it's kind of what i was thinking but as I said I was a bit worried they would fly off. And like Pauly said maybe I could do one at a time as the noise is definitely not plural , I suspect the L/F as it made a similar noise as I popped it back on and as I tap around the edges with the palm of my hand firmly i think I can here it a bit to. As far as the other noises mentioned Thankyou, but as some of you may have read in a earlier post I only put this truck on the road after 40 years being off this year, so front brakes are new, backing plates are not rubbing ( but I did check just in case ) wheel bearings recently re-packed, and I jacked up the front end and spun them and all was quiet. As far as wind noise, no, this is a definite squeal not a whistle and can be heard at very low speeds, honestly it sounds a lot like a squealing release bearing but then there would be a difference when I depress the clutch while coasting and that makes no difference to the sound. Guess I'll try a bit of silicone and maybe start with just the L/f then when it's insured again I'll go from there. Thanks all. You know I've been considering some different wheels and tires anyway, maybe a winter upgrade?

Yeah, strange, I thought the lug nuts were not tight. Popped the caps, re-torqued and went for a ride.
No noise. Put the caps back on and the noise was back.
Just a thought,what disc brakes you using? the 73 up Mopar sliding caliper,if the pads are not tight will squeek.
You can bend the ears on the outer pad or use brake pad glue. Had a Charger that did that.

Good point, this truck sits on a 81 Dodge truck 1/2 ton chassis with those brakes BUT if it were the bads the noise would go away when I apply the brakes and there is no change plus I do not here the noise when the truck is jacked up and I spin the wheels, I think its the caps.
 
I know 2 people who got flats when full wheel covers spun cutting the valve stem.
Pictured is the 100% fix for all tics, knocks, squeaks or lifter noise, loose windows
