OK, it's going to take me some time but I'm going to follow what I see as being the consensus here and do a tune up. One thing at a time, I don't have a vacuum gage. Any recommendations? Thanks!!
They're all pretty much the same. Amazon has some for between 20 and 30 Canadian.
Once you've got your timing dialed in, use the pressure reading to verify that you have the right step up spring in your 1406. If your spring is too heavy for the vacuum you're pulling, you're going to be in power enrichment mode more often than you need to. Also, if you've never checked, make sure that your floats are set correctly. If they're too high, you might be inadvertently dumping un metered fuel into her. Along the same line, the Edelbrocks don't like fuel pressure too high. I had to put a pressure regulator between my pump and carb to dial it back to 5 PSI. My Carter fuel pump was just a bit too much for mine.
