Buying from afar

Man, that's going back a minute... I did that job in 1994. I believe it was Lubriplate white grease (the stuff in the toothpaste tube). I didn't know if petroleum-based grease would attack the gears. I ran that car daily for a couple of years and never had another door issue. It was still working like a champ last I saw the car in '98.
