without doing a case study here: it's basically a function of big company (AT&T) buying warner bros and then spun them off, they then acquired discovery and their properties. MT was already in debt from when they were purchased from primemedia back when by a PE firm for something like 1.5B and that never fully dissolved as print media went down the toilet and the pivot to online/video was an additional investment-- but that's neither here nor there.
41B in the hole is for warner bros/discovery and all of their various arms as a
whole, and importantly to note here this includes
property.
WB gambled and lost, now they're restructuring. they'll cut the fat and the lower probably 20% of performing shows, probably sell off a bunch of IP and close up a few divisions while holding onto the rights for future use.
