I had Dad's Toro 200(?) when we moved in. Great for sidewalks but not 60 plus foot long driveways. Neighbor threw out an 8hp Bolens. Needed new engine, idler pullies and belts. Other than oil changes and belts every other year, it was great. Two years ago it started scrapping in the second stage housing. Bearing assy. NLA. Took it apart to fix. Sat in pieces thru one winter. Last January, got a 5hp MTD from the BIL. He moved and was going to leave it at the house. Looked like new so I grabbed it. True to form, I'll be trying to get it going during the first snow storm will my Wife is out shoveling. Why mess with tradition?
They work pretty good being a single stage.
Mine is a Craftsman 24" duel stage with a 10 hp Briggs. Heated handles and steering assist. It works really good.
Not much it won't go through. My driveway is 114 ft plus another 14 once past the city sidewalk soit earns it's keep. Bought it in 2009 and just replaced the second stage belt but has been trouble free but it also is well maintained too
