I ended up grinding down the inside lip in some spots which let the clip fit better. The pictures show the before and after.

I think what you did is fine. you may have been able to open up the clip a bit and install it without issue The back side of the clip only is there to protect the top from the point of the screws. the clip does not need too much spring pressure to function correctly

Someone did this to the center and right of center holes on my 67 Dart Convert #2
