So how do these ignition cables go?

That setup was deleted from the factory plug wires pretty early on; by '64 or '65 they all had straight ends and it worked fine. Which cylinders get which wires is a matter of wire length. The longest ones go to 1 and 6. The second-longest ones go to 2 and 5. The shortest ones go to 3 and 4.
Great solution. Is it a social thing or are people just getting dumber?
