How to set breaker points?

First of all by looking at the replies nobody knows how to set points, on single point distributor the gap is .017 and the dwell is between 28 and 33 on a dual point distributor each set of points the gap is .017 and the dwell is between 27 and 32 these have to be set separately. witch means you have to disconnect 1 set of points and set the dwell and then do the same with the other set. the dwell on both sets of points together should be between 37 and 42. to accomplish this, you need one of these distributor machines.

Nonsense. I've run several cars "back in the day" and back then had never even SEEN a distributor machine

You don't need to "disconnect" per se. You just block first one set, then the other, open with something like a folded matchbook, etc, and set one at a time "to the book" then check the total.

I will admit that either a scope or dist machine is handy for checking shaft wear and play and other mechanical/ electrical problems that may develop

OP: I would look around and find a decent old dwell/ tach meter, and most do/ should have a points resistance test. You can find those on Craigslist, Marketplace, or even (cough gag) ebay. There are many so called brands, but anything Craftsman or Penske, Snap on, etc would be good.

Personally I do not recommend using feeler gauges. In fact I almost never used them. Tossed in the new points, brought the dist up "on the cam" to max opening and just eyeballed it, then connected the dwell meter. You can rough in the dwell on the starter.

MAKE SURE you set the points BEFORE you set the timing.

In this day and age, good quality "condensers" (capacitors) are yet another issue.
