How to set breaker points?

There is a correlation between the points gap & dwell. Setting the gap to the correct amount is all that is needed. That requires removing the cap, wires sometimes = work. I suspect the dwell # was provided so that mechanics could check the gap without removing the cap. This saved time & money during tune ups.
