FUEL TANK INSTALLATION ORDER

I removed and reinstalled my tank earlier this month. Being a 75, the filler tube slides in from the outside of the quarter panel. Not sure what year they stopped the filler tube from being installed from the inside of the quarter panel and it sounds more complicated.

Before reinstalling the tank I tried putting the filler tube into the grommet/tank on the ground to see how difficult it would be. I’ve read a lot about using lube (dish soap, Vaseline to WD-40) to help get the filler tube in so was prepared for a battle. It was super tight getting it in which I though was weird since I bought a new grommet from DMT a couple of months ago after reading a lot about the diameter of some grommets not being the right size. Even installing the DMT grommet into the tank was a struggle which was foreshadowing. I tried some WD-40 on the grommet and the filler to be and that didn’t really help much either.

I looked at my old grommet and it was still in great shape so reinstalled it and then test fitted the filler tube. Without any lube the tube went in with not much of a struggle. I then lifted the tank up (I had emptied it so didn’t need a helper) and got both straps on tightening the nuts about halfway along the J bolts.

Then inserted the filler tube from the outside of the quarter panel (with foam ring/circle on prior to putting tube thru the quarter panel) and tried slipping the trunk floor seal on once the tube end was close to the tank grommet. It was a struggle so wiped some WD-40 on the tube and the floor seal slid right up. Then inserted the filler tube into the tank. It went in pretty easily twisting it to help it in until it got close to the quarter panel. I had the outside of the quarter panel tapped pretty good in case the flange touched the paint. Once the outer flange of the filler tube was almost touching the quarter panel, I moved the tank flush up against the trunk floor/spare tire curve and tightened up the nuts on the J bolts. Then inserted the filler tube so the foam ring/circle was compressed against the quarter panel and screwed in the 4 screws to attach the tube flange to the quarter panel. Then slid the floor seal down to the trunk floor and put the 5 screws in to hold that down.

I’ve since filled the tank and gone around some corners and don’t have issues with gas leaking around the gasket/filler tube. Not that I dream of dropping and reinstalling gas tanks in my Scamp but it was a pretty simple process.
