Oil smells like gas...
Quick question to regards of putting a splash of fuel in the carb and it fires up. How much running are you doing? If it isn't running long enough to thoroughly get up to temperature for a period of time, just short starts, that alone can be your problem. If not getting up to temp, the cold running engine with its cold oil will not boil off the fuel that inherently gets into the oil. Engines need to see full operating temps to "boil" off moisture and fuel. This is super common with people who don't have the car finished and just start it occasionally, only do very short trips, etc. Marine industry is likely the worst for this.
