Tickin nose all the time
I just went through something similiar on my 360 with X heads which are virtually the same as your J heads and I have Comp cams adjustable rockers. In their literature that came with the rocker arms it said to use their part # 7821 pushrods if your running a hyd. cam and 7822 if your running a solid cam. I'm running a hyd. cam so I ordered the 7821's. The only difference is the 7822's are .108" longer. Well when I put in the 7821's that they said to use they were too short. I had enough adjustment to adjust it out but when I did it caused the pushrod to be off center towards the exhaust side (which I didn't notice at first). I ran it this way for about 1,000 miles and it constantly had valve train noise that I like you couldn't seem to adjust out. The other day I went to install new valve springs and that's when I noticed the pushrods were off center and when I pulled them out one fell apart. I ordered the longer pushrods and put them in and they are perfectly centered and now it don't have any valve train noise. Don't know if your problems the same but you may look into it.
