hey guys - tell me about head studs

I have a 340 with an 871 blower on it.

I recently purchased the car and "renovated it", but left the engine alone.

Previous owner put a new set of Jheads on it and used Felpro Blue's.

I have blower motors in my boat and on the engines my friends and I only use Cometic gaskets. A few of my friend told em that SB mopars running a lot of compression should have head studs installed - tell me about head studs please.

1: Should I have studs installed?

2. what are the bolt torque settings for the heads and intake manifold and are there any head bolts that need to be sealed when putting the heads back on.

If you are running a blower, you should run head studs. Mopars don't have as many head bolts as a sbc.

IIRC, all head bolt holes are blind, no sealant needed.

All threads should be chased with a bottoming tap. Studs should installed only finger tight in the block. Stud nut torque figures are supplied by the manufacturer and a special lube should be used on the threads to assure proper torque. ARP supplies this lube with their studs.

Keep in mind that studs may make it difficult to remove/install your heads. ARP studs now have a hex broached in the top that allows you to spin them out with a hex key.

where does one by these studs and what mods to the block and or head are necessary?

Summit racing has the head stud kits and no block mods are necessary. If you want to run cometics, you will need the block deck and head surface finished to 50ra or smoother IIRC.

I sent them to my Buddy's over at Cometic, it'll brighten their Monday morning blues for sure.

I would like to add that when you install the studs for the 1st time you should cycle them to full tork twice before going to final tork, this will save you from having to retork your Cometics after the motor is installed which is a major pain in the a.........
