Make sure your choke is opening, sounds like that might be an issue.
Another thing - I recently had a problem with a BBD where it was flooding really bad. The floats were sunk, in other words the floats were leaking and flooding the carb out. Pulled the float and shook it next to my ear - I could easily hear the fuel sloshing inside them. Car would not stay running and was shooting sooty exhaust all over the place - aggghhh ! Threw a new float in it ($6.50 at autobone), reset the level and its running perfect again.
I'd persist and figure out what's wrong before buying a rebuilt carb. reman'd carbs like this cost a small fortune - > $200. These BBD's are easy and simple to work on as someone else mentioned.
