I toasted my transmission behind my slant six. I will probably end up buying a rebuilt one for 500.00. I dont have much choice right now as I need the car to get to work. My question is this, does anyone have any experience with this manual http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/A-72...022QQitemZ350027301144QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW ? I have another transmission that I dont know the condition of, but would like to do my own work eventually. Be kind of nice to have a spare transmission. Is there a better manual for rebuilding a 904? Thanks.

That is a good reference.

There is also a video by Paul Zank/Technical Videos that is good for TF727 rebuilds.

There are some differences in the 904 from 727. They are really easy to rebuild. Even special tools that the book says are required can be worked up using other tools.

Thanks for the reply, I would like a 904 specific video or manual. I am dumb that way. It just avoids any confusion. I hate going to a trans shop because I know nothing about transmissions. I am sure transmission shops like their customers that way. From what I understand, cleanliness is important, what is the best way to clean out the transmission once it is all apart? I dont have 5 gallons of solvent laying around. Is there a water based cleaner? Keep the info coming.

That is a good manual. I have it and looking through it I find it is a near carbon copy of a factory service manual but a few things added. It is for both 904's and 727's though. The differences are so minimal you shouldn't have problems.

Once you get it apart you can use a can of Gunk (or similiar) engine degreaser on it and wash it off with a garden hose then make sure to blow all the water out or any water left in it will oxidise. If you don't have a way to do this you can take it to a engine machine shop and most of them have a water based hot tank they can clean it in. My local shop does this for me for $20
