Where is the VIN stamped on a '70 340 block?
Thanks for the replies fellow A-body friends...I appreciate it...
Here's what I found today .. The numbers are stamped on the top part of the block, just under the front of the left side head. Had to take a little fine sandpaper and hold the light at some odd angles but made out the following, which I've kind of de-coded from my 1970 re-printed manual. It's 14 #'s/letters.. I'm 99% sure of the #'s but the eyes aren't what they used to be.
FW340P31970349 .... Here's what the manual says....
FW = Power train (what's this?)
340 = obviously CI
P = designates low compression (confused here)
3197 = 10,000 day calendar (confused here as well)
0349 = engine built that day
Anyone help me out here ? I don't see where this stamping matches the VIN?
Also, on the left side of the block I made out the following, fairly large embossed cast #s ... couldn't see the first few (will have to clean better and get a stronger light) but I can see what looks like ???80880-340-1
On the right side of the block in large embossed cast #s is 1 8 70 separated by big dots in between.. I assume this is the date the block was cast ?
There's a large 294 embossed on the bottom of the oil pan... ?
On the left top of the radiator is stamped 38086 and on the right top is 2998.978
I'd appreciate any help in figuring this out, and how one tells if the engine block is original to the car ??
Thanks folks
Kenny
