I am looking at the 273 as it seems to be the engine that nobody does up, but as you guys have said it is not the easyest or cheapest engine to do. It is also the original engine but that is no big deal.

There is a 273 commando for sale on ebay right now would this be a better starting point than the 2brl, or are they pretty much the same engine?

Austin, by the time you get that engine shipped here, its gonna be spendy. They are pretty similar. Other than the pistons, most of a 4bbl 273 can be substituted into a 2bbl block and get just as much, if not more power, than an original 273 Commando engine.

If you have access to a cheap 360, that WILL get you the most bang-for-the-buck, but not nearly as neat as a 273 4bbl!
