A833 question

Ran into a buddy of mine yesterday and he asked if I still had my swingers. He said that he has a 4 speed trans with shifter, linkage, and peddles. He said if I brought him 3 -4 hundred dollars I could have it. Was wondering if the shaft is different for a small block or big block? And if so how do I tell which is which?
