This POS Carter AFB I've been trying to use SUCKS!!!! Well, it's part Edelbrocks fault too. This is a little 500cfm carb that I've had sitting around for 25 years or so. I originally bought it for a Chevy 305 way back when. Anyway, I only used it for a few months and switched to a Q-Jet on that motor. It sat unused until a few months ago.

Before I put it on the Dart, I rebuilt it with a Carter zip kit. I bought an Edelbrock 'calibration' kit so I could experiment with different jet/rod combos. The Edelbrock jets are the biggest joke... the threads are deformed from where they cut the screwdriver slot. Out of 5 pairs, only about 4 jets TOTAL are any good. If I tried to put in some of them, it would surely strip the threads in the carb body.

Well, I've tried damn near every combination I can come up with, which isn't many, but I can't get a decent tune. It is way too lean. I've got the biggest jets, and the smallest rods (that don't sound right) but I'm still not getting enough fuel. With the initial timing set at 5°, and NO vacuum advance, it pings at anything over 2/3 throttle.

I'm ready to junk this carb and get something different. I'd like a 650cfm vacuum secondary Holley. Anyone have a good used one they would part with for a reasonable price?

what are you trying to run that 500 on
I ran a 500 edelbrock on a stock 318 and it was ok. Good mileage. but the TQ outperformed it by far. I ran the 500 on a 360 and it was so lean I couldnt hardly drive it.
I like the eddy carbs for a street car but a 500 is to small.

This is a stock 318 with an Edlebrock SP2P intake manifold and a set of Dougs headers with 2-1/2" exhaust. The throttle response is phenominal. If I'm cruising at 15mph in 2nd and hit the throttle about half-way, it nearly chirps the tires. It definately snaps your head back. But ANYTHING over 2/3 throttle and ping ping ping.

I've got the .098 jets (the biggest I have) in the primaries with the smallest rods (.063x.047). The biggest jets I have for the secondaries are .089. I have another set of .098's and a set of .092's, but I can't use them because the threads are screwed up.

Edited to correct jet sizes

Give Jessie from BIGS Performance a call, maybe he has something laying around he would sell you. If not he might know where you can get a carb cheap. I don't know squat about anything other than a Holley so I can't help you much on the tune. Get a holley and I can help you out with anything you want to know.
