Cost to Sandblast a K-member

-
Tyler, STOP!
Before you do anything, please do a net search for "electrolytic rust removal" or something similar and become very familiar with the process. Here is a link to a good explanation: http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/andyspatch/rust.htm
Pay special attention to the products used (washing SODA, not soap) and the proper electrical connections (VERY IMPORTANT).

The process does wonders when done properly.

ok thanks. that is exactly why i asked. i have messed with electricity and it can do amazing things when used correct and horrible things when just one little thing is messed up. thanks

Google: Electrolysis

Read several sites before you do anything.
Then work slow.

Here is the link to a site I send friends too.

I have used this process for gun parts to tractor parts.
Electrolysis removal of rust is a major time save.

I can see it now ...... the layman's version of the formula:

Tyler + k-member + water + 110 electricity = zzzzzzzttttttttttttt

Just messin with you Tyler! I'm sure you'll do fine once you read up on it.

alright.. so I'm pretty pleased with the rust removal electrolysis provides, but I STILL can't get all the grease off the crossmember. Here are a couple of pics. If you look closely, you can see the line where the rust starts and stops. - This was after sitting in the water for about 16 hrs.

A wire brush will loosen up the grease, and then you can rinse it off, but it will not come off with just a pressure washer. I want ALL of this grease off before I apply any primer or paint.

You said your compressor probably isn't up to snuff for a sandblaster, but do you have a friend who might? Do you have a Harbor Freight store nearby? Take a look at these items:

Hopper Blaster
Spot Blaster

Heck, for that matter, you could probably rent a large compressor for a whole day cheaper than the price you were quoted for having it blasted. Check out the local equipment rental shops. Gather up a pile of stuff you want blasted (maybe get a few friends needing some blasting done and everyone split the cost of the rental and the bags of sand) and do it all at once.

United Rental compressor

Time to get creative,

sorry i havent been on. i just got outta the hospitle. i typed in electrolite instead lol jk. i have looked at it a lot and see more how to do it. will it take off grease at all?

if you lived close to scottsdale, az id blast it for you at my shop. i just did mine since we bought a military blast cabinet. once i did though i found how shotty the welds are for the motor mounts and will be strengthening any weak spots.

i took a 4 in. wire brush in a grinder and steel wool to mine. took two weekends and 2 cases of beer. pretty cheap and satisfying.

Not really well, but that's not what electrolysis is for anyway. It's not a "cleaning" process, but some paint and grime will slough off. Remember what electrolysis is for - to get rid of rust. If grease and grime is the issue, look for another method.

We have one equipment rental shop I could check with, but I'm pretty sure they don't have a sandblaster, but they might could do a compressor. I'm itching to buy a big compressor, but it just isn't in the budget right now. For $500 you can get a pretty decent one that'll push about 14 cfm. I wish I'd kept the old watering trough heater from the farm.. I could heat the water in the tub where I've been electrolyzing the k-member, and then fab up a beater for the drill, and have a makeshift washing machine. I know there is someone out there who's thinking.. "why go through all the trouble? Just spend the cash and have it done." That's probably right, but if I can stumble on a good way of getting THIS clean and rust free, every other part of the car that needs cleaned will be a piece of cake. What's funny about this whole deal is that you have this k-member sitting in a solution of what is basically Oxy-clean, and it is only softening the grease, not removing it. what I really need is a big honkin steam-genie with about 3000 psi water pressure. I know where I can use one, but its a piece of junk, don't know if the kerosene burner still works in it, or if it has a nozzle on it. Ah well... I'll think of something, I always do.

I would just have someone that can blast it cheap do so with a preesure pot and large CFM compressor. I olove my 110 pound pressure pot.
Did you try and call any Headstone places{yes grave yard type head stones}
they have to blast and will do smaller stuff cheaply to pick up extra cash, while doing the granite. Wheels and other things smaller are what they would be looking to do while set up.
As far as the eleictric what is done is pos "ions" are pushing in on the lose metal {rust}then the juice is reversed and neg "ions are applied" pulling the lose metal it off. then it has to be " reversed" again since the metal will then be black to get it back to silver metal again.
I used to work 300 feet from a RediStrip locatin and was friends with them

The reason I used a kiddy pool was to do the total part at one time. No line in the metal plus no flashrusting on the exposed cleaned end.

You guys do know that acid will take rust off asap? Yes it is not the best thing to fool with but a plastic container filled with PPG DX579 and water will bubble and take the rust off smaller items like bolts and smaller hardwear.
You can also take Muratic acid{used to clean concreate and bricks} and clean body panels but it must be nutralised after. It is nasty stuf so i would not use it due to disposal problems
