HELP!!! I was told it might be the wheel bearings... if this is true, how hard is it to fix and about how expensive??? At first it would come and go, like when I would steer to the right or left at a higher speed than 40mph(even slightly) it would happen... but lately it seems constant. It feels like it is starting to affect the steering too! I just had my brakes redone a little over a month ago... should they of said something? I need a ton of advice on this... PLEASE... Thank you all!!!!

I don't think it is a belt... I have checked the belts and they are both tight and no tears or anything wrong.

It feels like the front end is loose while I drive.

If you have wheel bearings going bad you need to fix it before it ruins a spindle or worse. Jack it up and turn the wheels by hand. Maybe you should take it back to whoever serviced the brakes. Be careful ! Good luck.

If you lay something with a strait edge on top of the belt then push down on the belt how big of a space is there between the belt and the edge? How old is the belt?

Jack the front up,use jackstands, grab top/bott, of tire and shake. If loose, and you`ve been hearing squealing, your bearings are probably allready shot.pull greasecap, make sure cotter pin is still there. In spindle nut. If not, you and your mechanic need to talk. look for scoring on races/loose races in hub. let us know what ya find.

If it is the wheel bearings, you can (carefully) touch the wheel hub after driving it, it will be HOT! It could be the PS belt slipping. You can easily check the belt by starting the car and turning the wheel left and right, lock to lock; if it squeals it's most likely your belt. Whatever it is, it needs to be found and corrected...

Okay today when I was driving I figured that the sound was not a Squealing... but more like a Howling... deep howling sound... almost like a grinding, but not as tortuous... maybe that will help with more suggestions... Thank you all again!

That would be your wheel bearings and I'm betting that if one is that bad the others aren't far behind so I would replace all 4 corners.

About how much would this cost through a mechanic and is it something that I could do and if so what would the cost be about?

Depends on what rearend you have. If it is a 7 1/4 the price goes up by $100 just for the bearings unless someone here has a secret source. If all you want to do is the front then use the Schucks website, find your parts, print the page with the price and part number on it (sometimes it is cheaper than the in store price) and bring it to the store.

I would just start out with the front end, so you will need...

seals x 2

bearings x 2

wheel bearing grease

a lot of paper towels

brake cleaner x 3 cans (1 1/2 per side)

Haynes manual and about one free afternoon if you have never done it before.

I havent done it on drum brakes... is it different from disc? I changed everything that has to do with brakes on a 97 suzuki x-90. Would it be much different or basically the same?

Thank you again for the help and advice!

If it is a wheel bearing problem, the noise "howling" will increase louder as your speed increases.

Easy to fix the front bearings.....a bit more involved if it's a rear. Jack it up in the rear and run it to decipher front or rear.

And, let me also welcome you to FABO..........8)

Thank you for the welcome!!! So far everyone is being soooo great!

It is definitely the front... when I turn even slightly going above 30 now it does it... So far with the parts search it is coming up to around 75.00... not to bad... that is if I have all the right things... hehe.

Heres the list

KF BR17 CR BEARING
Inner
SKF BR2 SKF BEARING
Outer
voline 614 VALVOLINE VAL-PLEX GR 1LB
Grease... Do I need that much??
CRC Chemicals 05084 N/C BRAKLEEN CA
brake cleaner
KF 19221 CR SEAL

Let me know if this is a good start... I want to do it right thats why all the double checking... sorry if I seem like a pain...

I still say go back to whoever serviced the brakes. I dont agree with replacing wheel bearings on all 4 corners either.
If this was a front wheel drive that needed either front bearing I would replace both but thats as far as it goes. Our wheel bearings are a totally different type and are sugject to human error.

...........what kinda car we're dealing with. I'd like to know. What ever it is it does sound as though it maybe the bearings. Sounds as though you have never done this before. I do 99% of the work here in my shop on my cars so there is a cost savings when you already have the tools. Orielly's will loan you the tools to DIY. Something i would like to see in this group of people is this. Everyone is great with the assistance of advice. Hands down the best bunch of techs on the planet... But...we need more. There are some A Body guys in your area or close by that as myself would assist you, you do the work, in doing this work without getting hosed by a shop. Anyone in my area has that benefit. Bring it over and get your hands dirty. Who knows, you may even learn something and come away with a good feeling. I'll post a thread on this very issue later. What car?

sounds like the brake people didn't repack the bearings, put them on too tight, or not tight enough. I agree with redfish, you need to have a talk with them.

It is a 75 Duster... I would love to have someone do that... I have posted ads on craigslist for someone who has knowledge about many different things that would like to be a teacher, I am a teacher to preschool children and don't make enough for the shops... I will always to the work myself, but if I had someone nearby that I could ask questions to, so I could make sure that I am doing it right that would be WONDERFUL! I have already done the starter cylinoid, a lot of sanding and primering, installed a bench seat, a deck, fixed the wipers. So I can figure a lot of things out, but just having someone with the larger things is soooo much better and safer! Thanks Small Block!!!
