street racing stories..you know ya do it..
Back in '88, I had my '69 Road Runner 383, 4spd. Dana rear end, and
your mild hi-perf. parts from Super Shops. Holley carb, Mallory ignition,
pretty much anything I caN afford from Sup. Shops.
Anyhow, this guy a lot older than me is a well known gear head,
a tuning, and troubleshooting expert. He owned all makes of muscle
cars, wasn't partial to just one brand.
O.K. This guy was the service manager for the local Chevy dealer
in South Chicago, SEIP Chevrolet to be exact, and he had a brand
new yellow IROC Z a TPI 350 car. The engine and drive train were
all upgraded, LT-1 aluminum heads, aft market chip, whatever GM perf.
offered back in '89.
He pulled on the side of me on 108th & Ewing Ave. at the stop sign,
we look at each other and take off, we were even steven to the next stop
sign at 110th street. I had a Mr. Gasket in line rachet shifter, I was
slammin the gears pedal to the floor!!! I never pulled away and he never
pulled away from me. So, were at the stop sign on 110th street and he
says to me that he beat me!!! I said "Your frickin crazy, lets go
again, you did'nt beat squat". I pulled a lever in my car, to open up
my header dumps. We take off again, same outcome, neck & neck
the whole quarter. I wanted badly to beat him cause this car was supposed to
be a muscle car killer. We got to 112th st. I said lets go down
to toll road frontage road, nice & smooth and no cars. He turned the
corner and that was the end. Word sure traveled fast, about that
young kid, and his 69 BEEP BEEP. God , I miss that car!!
