I have recently gotten myself a basket case dart for cheap. The reman 318 is low miles, but I am upgrading the carb, intake and cam. I ordered comp cams XE 256H. I have also ordered the recommended springs 901-16. My question is it nessesary to use their lifters (another $90) or can I just use the ones that I already have in the motor. I have already put too much money in the little 318 already.
My plans are building a 440 727 combo that is just sitting in my garage. I only plan on using the 318 in the meantime. Thanks

Go easy on me Rumblefish. Haha

You can not reuse your old lifters, unless that is, you want to wipe the engine out and waste alot of money.

Order the lifters.

Nope, you keep looking for cheaper. Forget it. It costs money and you need to save for it or dump it in favor of the big block.

Sometimes you need certain things, sometimes you don't.

You need the springs and lifters. And that is the bottom line.

if your trying to pinch a little here and there your going to have to do ALOT of research at many places (summit, jegs, local auto parts) a good thing to have is a buddy that works for a parts store or hotrod shop that can get you a discount. but rumble is rite you got to buy them or whats the point in using the 318 all together cuz if you use the old your only asking for it to break.

regular HYD Cam engines cannot reuse lifters, it will wipe the cam lobes.
Roller Cam engines can REUSE the ROLLER LIFTERS

Reason #1 I prefer to build roller motors.

Thanks guys. I feel kind of silly for asking, but you have convinced me. I will have a couple of weeks before I will be ready for them anyway. I will just order them then.

i wouldnt feel silly....we are all learning as we go and some of us are NOT professinals here so asking is always good....it at least saves alot of time and money!

You could make the investment now in a set of SM Composite lifters, no break-in, no cam wear, swap cams anytime and they'll also fit the 440.

One set of lifters will probably last you a lifetime, 20 cams and 10 motors if you want. Put them in any hole, on any cam, no cam lube, no break-in, any engine , in any hole, no eating cams ever again.

There new Street Hydraulic with .100 travel sets up just like a stock lifter, silent run... Cheapest insurance you can get for your motor.

Go through this board and see how many guys have lost their motors because of Cam Failure, do you want to be on that list?

Not to mention the gain in top end HP (usually 25-40) because of the increased spring pressures now controlling the valve on the seat which is exactly why Automotive roller lifters were developed in the 40's-50's.

It's 2009 the technology is here to prevent all these problems.

Rebuild engine after wiping out cam $3000 (If your lucky, it can go much higher)
SM Lifters $720
Save $2180.00

Over 10 years most guys will re-cam, rebuild or re-motor 3-4 times and each time you do that break-in your rolling the dice... Mix a little eye of bat, lip of chicken and armpit hair of snake together add 1 oz. to oil and cross all toes and fingers, turn the key and pray.

Or.....fire it up and go...."your in good hands."

Schubecks have thier own horror stories too. As most issues are builder or customer related, I cant see the value in a set of $800 lifters. What about the issues such as the puck falling off? Or delivery times? Is it still "2.5 weeks" which really means some time in the next 6 months? Seems some guys have very good luck, some don't. For that money, they should jump in the block and I hear they dont. Not without the special camshaft too. There are a few EDM pressure fed lifters out now, the only cars needing these are limited racing classes.
