1963 Valiant V200 Wagon

my plans for tomorrow are to first check the float levels, i bought the clear plugs so i can check it while running without have to open the plugs. then take it for a quick spin on the freeway, bring it back and see what the plugs say. also while its hot, i can check valves since i have a few that still sound bit noisy. what would be the best way to check for a vacuum leak. is carb cleaner the best thing to spray on it? or would i even be reading 19 on my vacuum gauge if i had a leak. wouldnt the gauge read low? sorry for the dumb questions. this is all a learning lesson for me. i like bolting things together better than tuning hehe.
