I drove around in Orangedust today, and I am having a hard time
figuring out this start-up problem.
I have a remake Mopar yellow-cap battery, and it is holding 12 volts, I
get a good initial start in the morning, but when I shut it off ....
and try to re-start her it gives me this awful CLICK, CLICK, CLICKETY,
noise from the starter. I put some new cables on and it still does it
after I shut it down. It sounds like a GM solenoid clickey noise...
When I hook up a battery charger to it , it cranks normal like a
ZZ TOP tune Manic Maniac, you know the ... VVVVVVV....VROOoommm.
Is my original starter bad or is it something else......
What do you think guys, I keep charging the battery and testing it and
it shows me 14 when running and 12 when not running.
It is not a Chryco Product unless it has the Hi- wind starter, I love it...
Any Ideas!!!

is the altenator charging when it is running? if it is ok, then take the battery to a autozone and have them load test it. sounds like it could has a dead cell in it.

I agree, had this problem many times. Everything seems right, shows 12V, charging etc, however with a bad cell = drop in cranking amp. He could also try a good knownb attery to confirm :thumblef:

I am getting between 15 and 17 when it is running. When I had
the car in California, I had it in a heated under ground garage and
sometimes I would not drive it for weeks. It would fire right up,
after all that time of sitting. I am going to try another battery,
when I get to the station tomorrow. I am going to be ticked off
if that battery is bad. I paid a little more money for it to have
the old school yellow cap battery. Its only about a year old.
I guess all my California cars, don't like the weather way up
here in Minnesota. I changed 2 batteries already on my Pick-ups.!!

A few more things, a battery that just sits for "any" length of time is not really a good thing. I would think a few weeks is fine however. Over time the cells have time to build up sulfates on the plates...thus, will still show a good charge (12V), but a great loss in cranking amps; and even though you jump it and it shows a good charge from your ALT does not mean your batterys fine. After you try out another battery to confirm, and if all seem good; take your back your battery for a replacement if still under warrenty. Tell them it shows voltage but won't crank for any length of time.
Good Luck, Let us know your results. :salut:

Good news and bad news, the battery is fine ..... I could not

start it the other day at the gas station, no matter what kind

of battery, I threw at it . The good news is it was not an original

starter in the Orangedust , it was a re-pop. A customer stopped

by the station today and said he has an NOS starter for the

my 70 340. Good enough for me........

Damm, Stumped again! Well, I still say...If it "was" the correct starter to begian with.....Then it would be the battery..LOL Glad you got her :thumblef:

It is all good guys , I got the new the starter for 25 bucks...

It had a lot of dust on the box... I still think there is a problem

with old style battery, it was dead again.

The Orangedust cranks rite over and starts, with a quick high

winding sound. I did not want to drive around to much this

morning , because it has expired blue California license plates on

it. I'm going to transfer them on Tuesday.

I did open it up today and got scratch through 3 gears, but I

was gentle with her............ I hated to go home, felt good........
