I've never had any luck in repairing a speedometer.
I remove bezel and heat controller and reach through that opening to replace defrost vents. I can work sitting up much easier than standing on my head.
PLease not that those vents are left and right hand. Another member here bought new ones and screwed them up trying to force fit them in the wrong position.
