Its not so much the lift #s but the size of the cam @ 50.
you might have a cam with say .453 lift for a 318
but the advertised duration is 304
if you looked only at these #s you would think it was way to big
but this cams duration @ 50 is 225 deg.
it's center line is 108
this is the same cam i just put in my 318 67 cuda
It has a really chunky idle but responds at any rpm.
for example i will show you a purple shaft cam
a .474 purple shaft is .474 lift right??
it's advertized duration is 280
it's center line is 110
now looking at those numbers you would think, it's not that big right???
but @ 50 it's 238
it is a very strong cam for a 318 and with everything correct in the combination
like the compression ratio at 9.0:1 \ headers \ 3000 stall convertor \ 3.91 gears\26 inch slick and a distributor that has at full advance by 2200 rpm
it will perform really good.
now thats a good combination with a 318.
BUT lets take the same combination and put it in a 360ci
what happens is since it is a bigger cube motor,the cam becomes smaller due to the amount of air it wants to pull in.
360 combination>>>>still 9.0:1 compresion ratio \ headers \ 2600 stall convertor \ 3.55 gears \ 26 inch tall slick and the same distributor.
both motors will run great but the 318 will have a radical idle and the 360 will have a chunky idle.
and did you notice the 360 will not need as much gear and convertor with the same cam.
if you answer these question you can then pick a cam based on your combination and availible parts.I numbered them so please answer them that way.It will be so much easyer and quicker THANK YOU!!!

7}HOW SMOOTH DO YOU WANT THE CAR IDLE????
FOR IDLE QUALITY JUST LOOK AT THE CAMS CENTER LINE
108 WILL BE A RADICAL TO A CHUNKY IDLE IN A 318

110 IS BETTER AT IDLE
114 IS BETTER YET
